Florida rental car tolls: what you pay and how to avoid fees
Most Florida tolls cannot be paid in cash, so a rental car's tolls are billed through the rental company, with its own fees on top. The state's page and Orlando's toll agency both say how it works. This page records what they say, and what neither prints.
Read from the official pages on October 18, 2026. Rental-company fee amounts change and are not copied here: the figures found on different pages disagreed, so check your own rental agreement.
How a rental car pays tolls
Florida's toll roads are cashless in the fast lanes. A camera photographs the rental car's plate and sends the bill to the rental company's toll vendor, which collects the toll plus its service fees from the card used to rent the car.
www.sunpass.com/en/tolls/rentalVehicles.shtmlThe state says the service fees are kept by the vendor, not by the toll road agency, and that each rental company has its own program and fees. It tells renters to check the rental agreement for all fees.
www.sunpass.com/en/tolls/rentalVehicles.shtmlThe state's page says program rates are subject to change and points to each rental agency's website for current figures. It prints no fee amounts itself.
www.sunpass.com/en/tolls/rentalVehicles.shtmlA traveler with their own SunPass, or a Prepaid TOLL-BY-PLATE account, can add the rental car's plate and the rental dates to that account so the tolls are charged there. Post-paid Toll-By-Plate is not available in a rental, because those invoices go to the registered owner.

Orlando: the Visitor Toll Pass
Orlando's Visitor Toll Pass is described as free and temporary, for rental customers travelling round trip through Orlando International Airport. You reserve in its app, decline the rental company's toll program at pickup, add the car's plate, hang the pass from the mirror and return it to a drop box.
www.cfxway.com/agency-information/newsroom/news-releases/central-florida-expressway-expands-visitor-toll-pass-distribution-to-all-orlando-international-airport-terminals/Passes are picked up at six locations across Terminals A, B and C and returned to one of 14 drop boxes at the airport (release dated July 8, 2024).

It claims savings of as much as 80% against rental-car toll programs and does not say how that figure was calculated, so treat it as the agency's claim, not a measurement.

Not on the pages I read: the deposit amount, how long a refund takes, and a fee for an unreturned pass. Other pages mention a deposit and a fee, and none of them is the agency’s own, so they are not repeated here.
Questions to ask any company before you book a car
This applies to a rental counter and to a car service alike, ours included. Nothing here is sourced; it is the list worth having in hand.
- Is the toll fee charged only on days a toll is used, or every day of the rental?
- Is there a cap per rental, and is the toll itself charged at the lowest rate or the cash rate?
- Does declining the program trigger a larger per-toll penalty?
- For a chauffeured car: are tolls inside the quoted price or added after? Our terms list tolls among charges that may apply and be shown on the final charge.
When you would rather it was settled before you land.
