What can I do between leaving the ship and a late flight from Fort Lauderdale?
On cruise days airlines at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood may check bags only up to two hours before the flight, and Port Everglades stores no luggage, so a morning ship and a night flight leave hours to fill (Broward County Aviation Department, 2026; Port Everglades, n.d.).
The airport's own cruise page says to avoid arriving at the airport too early: the earliest some airlines check bags is two to three hours before departure, and on cruise days airlines at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood may only be able to check bags up to two hours before the flight. It adds that cruise-day flights are booked to capacity, that many returning passengers arrive at 8:30 a.m., and that the terminals can be crowded with limited seating (Broward County Aviation Department, 2026). A ship that docks in the morning and a flight that leaves at night leaves a gap of several hours that neither the port nor the airport is set up to fill.
The bags are the problem to solve first. Port Everglades says luggage cannot be left or stored at the port (Port Everglades, n.d.). The airport says Public Baggage Storage is available in all terminals, with a number to call (Broward County Aviation Department, 2026). It also says that some airlines offer baggage check-in at the port for the return flight, or have arrangements with baggage companies to carry bags from the cabin to the plane, and tells passengers to ask their airline whether it does (Broward County Aviation Department, 2026). Whether yours does is your airline's answer, not the port's or ours.
If the bags stay with you, a car booked by the hour is one way to spend the gap. One captain and one car stay with you for the afternoon, so the bags ride in the car and nothing is summoned again, and at the end the same car takes you the 5 miles to the airport for the flight. The hourly minimum is 2 hours for an Executive Sedan or Luxury SUV and 3 hours for an Executive Sprinter, and an Executive Sedan holds 2 bags, a Luxury SUV 5 and an Executive Sprinter 12.
Set the end of the afternoon backwards from the airline, not from the flight. Ask the airline when bag check opens for your flight, remembering that on cruise days it may be as late as two hours before departure, and give the desk the flight number and that time when you book. Where you spend the hours is yours to choose: the airport's own page suggests exploring nearby points of interest in Greater Fort Lauderdale rather than waiting at the terminal, and suggests a rental car for a late flight (Broward County Aviation Department, 2026); Quo does not recommend a place it has not read about.
One thing the car does not change is the line's own morning. Your departure time off the ship is issued by the cruise line near the end of the cruise, and the gap starts when you are off, not when the ship docks.
